The first thing to do is to be active at all times. So if you work at a desk you should try and take a walk on your break and if you are at home you could busy yourself with housework. The next step from this is to actually exercise regularly. If you hate the gym then why not take up a sport like tennis or cycling to keep active. Next thing to think about is how you are eating. Most people have meals a day and snack in between. Instead of this you should try small meals spread over the course of the day.
